The New York Post reports that some residents there say the flag has images that allude to the state’s racist past.
The Newburyport Daily News reports that the city council received a resolution on February 27 asking that the council support the removal of the Seal and Motto on the flag. The commission recommended the removal of some aspects of the flag. They say that doing so means they can reshape the flag in a way that better reflects the diverse nature of its residents.
The resolution was also referred to the General Government Committee on the same day by a 9-2 vote. Newburyport residents Marianna Vesey and Linda Lu Burciaga have been trying to push the vote for some time. They say that 55 other municipalities have already approved the measure and want to see it approved by their area.

Vesey says the current flag supports the idea that white people are “in charge of this world and that we have to subdue the Native American people” through a “colonializing and violent depiction.”

She continued by saying, “One of the reasons that we can ignore this so easily is that our white-supremacy culture has allowed for the disappearance of the Native American world. We’re trying to say that they are not gone. They are here among us, and we need to recognize that and honor it.”

Burciaga stated that the state flag is “problematic” and that they want to remove it from the state right away. She stated: “The illustrator patterned the belt after the red flannel belt of (Wampanoag leader) Metacomet, who was the leader of the first native war of resistance against English colonization,” and “His severed head was impaled on a pike and displayed in Plymouth for more than 20 years as a war trophy. That’s just one part of the depiction.”

Regardless, some others feel this is nothing more than wokeness run amok. They believe that a group is trying to change the flag for the entire state of Massachusetts for everyone. Regardless, it is something that these activists don’t seem to want to back off from. They are looking for any angle that they can take to try to get changes to the culture made right away.
