Buster Murdaugh, son of convicted murderer and disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh, is under intense public scrutiny after his father's life imprisonment sentence for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, Buster's mother, and brother.

Alex was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of weapons possession during a violent crime by a South Carolina jury on Thursday.

Currently residing in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Buster and his girlfriend Brooklynn White attended every day of his father's trial, which began on January 25. During the trial, Buster testified in his father's defense and described him as "destroyed, heartbroken" when he first saw him after the murders. "I walked in the door, saw him, gave him a hug. [He was] just broken down," Buster told jurors.

Alex's motive for the murders, according to prosecutors, was to divert attention from his alleged embezzlement of funds from his family's law firm and clients. He is facing 99 financial crime charges stemming from 19 separate indictments and totaling nearly $9 million.

The Murdaugh family has long been rumored to be involved in several other criminal cases. Buster himself is under scrutiny for the 2015 death of his high school classmate, Stephen Smith, who was initially described by police as a hit-and-run victim just miles from the Murdaugh family's hunting estate. The case has since been reopened, and the investigation into Smith's death is ongoing.

Attorney Eric Bland, who represented the children of the Murdaughs' late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died in the Murdaugh home in 2018, spoke on the Murdaugh family's alleged involvement in Smith's death on "Fox & Friends" on Sunday. "His clothes were intact, his shoes were on, and he had… a clear head trauma injury that looked like it was done by something other than a car," Bland told co-host Pete Hegseth.

Buster's professional life has also been scrutinized, with no clear indication of where he works. He was formerly employed at his family's law firm and attended the University of South Carolina before being expelled for plagiarism. In a phone call with his father obtained by FITS News in October 2022, Buster expressed surprise that he was receiving national media attention after a trip to Las Vegas with his uncle, Alex's brother, John Marvin Murdaugh.

"The next day, there was an article created about how I’m misusing funds by gambling," Buster said. "Someone took a picture of me and John Marvin in the casino. I guess that, I mean, I’m a national figure."

Despite the verdict and the numerous other ongoing investigations, a family friend of the Murdaughs, Dana Wilson, told "Dateline" that Buster has a "very loving family and support group." The complex narrative surrounding the Murdaugh family and their alleged involvement in various crimes is far from over.
