A famous San Francisco farmer’s market faces severe challenges as drug addicts have taken over the streets.

Fox News reports that certain vendors who have provided their products at the farmer’s market for many years have changed course and are looking at not returning to that market anytime.

Jenny Chan shared a photo of how the market had been overtaken by encampments that moved in around the Civic Center, which has been the home of the farmer’s market for a long time. Chan described the Civic Center as the “next Detroit” on “Fox & Friends.”

Chan said the following on Fox: “People are leaving. Businesses are closing down. It’s very unacceptable to live this lifestyle. I mean, the farmers market used to be the Heart and soul of our city, and now we can’t even have that.”

Chan said that many Heart of the City Farmers’ Market vendors had left, and only 5 remain now. She said: “We used to have rows and rows of crates of fresh vegetables, and now part of it is taken over by drug dealers on the sidewalk. There are vendors with stolen goods.”

Chan now describes the area as being too dangerous to do business there. She feels like she can only truly connect with her customers differently than they need and provide them with what they require from her company. She asked: “Would you want to shop like that? Would you want to shop for vegetables in the place where addicts are on the floor suffering?”

She then continued by saying: “They were offering free needles, foil, and snacks if you’re going in there to do drugs. And they put it next to the farmer’s market. Why did we decide to do that? I don’t remember voting on it, and I have no idea why they put it there. But then drug dealers started coming in and started selling their goods.”

Chan hopes the city can clean up the farmer’s market and make it so that vendors will feel safe enough to start selling their goods in the area again. She added at the end: “I think someone was arrested recently for being violent on the street at the farmers market. And I mean the overdoses, too. Many people overdose from using drugs at the tents next to the farmers market; this has been going on for maybe three years now.”
