Parents continue to clash with teachers’ unions.

We saw a massive uptick in this when schools struggled during COVID shutdowns and when school policies varied per state. After shutdowns ended, the return to the classroom and failing test scores caused more conflict. Now, parents want more say in their children’s education. Teachers and schools have long enjoyed being in charge, and now they woke up a sleeping giant -- parents.

Fox News reports, “Widespread calls for school choice and parental rights have emerged after states implemented lockdown measures during the Coronavirus pandemic. School choice became a salient issue after the COVID-19-induced lockdowns sparked a conversation on the scope of the government’s authority and the content that should be taught to children from public school curricula.”

Republican governors continue to push for universal school choice. So far, five states have passed universal school choice. The latest state to pass this legislation is Arkansas. Arkansas Governor Sanders points out that it’s about giving power back to the parents.

She says, “They can decide where their child can best be educated, whether at a private school, charter school, public school, or home school. The parents know best how their kids can thrive and what environment will allow them to do that.”

Most states have voucher programs and scholarship programs to help cover the cost of tuition when children attend private or charter schools. However, these are often restricted to children that reside in a failing school District or those with disabilities.

Universal choice legislation provides additional funding to help parents send their children to the school that they consider best for their child. Some states have also provided additional funding for homeschooled children.

As a parent, this is wonderful, and I hope other states follow suit. My daughter thrives in a homeschooled environment, but no funding exists. Being a single mom, it takes a lot to make our situation work, and I’m sure other parents feel the same. Parents know whether their child will thrive better in a charter school or if they should attend a private school. Some children thrive in a public school system, but that doesn’t apply to every child. It’s beautiful to see states giving parents the resources to help their children thrive educationally.
