According to Reuters, two of the four American citizens kidnapped in Mexico are dead, while the other two remain alive.

The Governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, confirmed the information on Tuesday, stating that one of the surviving Americans was wounded, and the other was unharmed.

The incident occurred when the group of Americans was caught in the crossfire of rival cartels shortly after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Two of the four Americans who survived the attack have returned to the U.S.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland was briefed by the FBI on the situation and said the State Department was working with Mexican authorities on the investigation. Garland expressed condolences to the victims' families and confirmed that two Americans had died in the attack. He also stated that the Justice Department would work to prosecute the cartel members behind the incident.

The video depicts a chaotic event involving numerous armed men in body armor. One of the individuals was forcibly pulled across the pavement, a female was shoved into the back of a white truck, and two other men, who appeared to be in a wounded state, were dragged and then placed into the same truck.

Law enforcement reported that four Americans were traveling to Mexico for medical services the first week of the month when the minivan they were traveling in was ambushed by a group of armed men. The assailants opened fire at the vehicle before forcibly taking the four people out and putting them in a truck. It is not believed that the Americans were the intended targets of the attack.

The travelers went from Brownsville, Texas, into Matamoros, Tamaulipas in Mexico, a place that has been overrun by cartel activities, and the United States State Department has issued a warning telling Americans to avoid going there.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the safe return of the victims and the apprehension of those responsible.

The victim’s sister, Zalandria Brown, identified one of the four Americans as Zindell Brown from Myrtle Beach. Brown's sister told the Associated Press that she has been in contact with the FBI and Mexican authorities since the incident. She added that her brother was hesitant to make the trip, warning his friends about the dangers before they departed.

"This is like a bad dream you wish you could wake up from," Brown told the Associated Press. "To see a member of your family thrown in the back of a truck and dragged, it is just unbelievable."

The victim’s father, O’dell William Brown, said the family is devastated by the news. "I don’t know which way to go right now," he said. "We don’t know what’s what."

The FBI and Mexican authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
