The New York Police Department released some video coverage that showed a suspect defacing a statue of Christopher Columbus.

Fox News reports that the video shows two suspects allegedly vandalizing the more than a century-old statue in Central Park. The police said the footage was captured on February 26th at approximately 10:14 pm.

The NYPD says the suspects allegedly sprayed red paint on the statue that read: "Murderer" and "Give Us Our Land Back." Those with tips on this case can call 800-577-TIPS.

Fox News reports that the 1-minute and 16-second clip shows one individual dressed entirely in black climbing on the side of the statue. The other suspect is dressed in an orange overcoat and is wearing a green bandana that covers his face. They are both seen climbing over the metal barricade protecting the statue to spray-paint words on it.

Fox News Digital obtained photos of the Christopher Columbus statue with the words "murderer" and "land back" spray-painted red. Those photos were received on February 27th. At that time, the police department stated that the matter was under investigation, but they didn't have additional information to provide.

The NYC Parks website says the statue is a bronze and Rockport polished granite statue dedicated initially on May 12, 1892. Their website also reports that The New Yorkers of the New York Genealogical Society commissioned Spanish sculptor Jeronimo Suno to make the statute back then.

After the murder of George Flyod, many different statues of Columbus and others have been targeted by protestors. Many have been vandalized or torn down by protestors. This is something that has played out throughout the country time and time again.

Certain local governments have begun to take down these types of statues ahead of time to avoid the potential for clashes with protestors and others.

Those opposed to these statues say that the arrival of Columbus to the Americas led to the mass genocide of native people. They say that Columbus and others committed many crimes from his era and wonder why he should be honored with a statue in modern America.

No matter where you fall on this, it's still a crime to vandalize a statue like this, and it means that some suspects are wanted by the police in New York now for their crimes. They will have to face the music when they are caught.
