Senator Bernie Sanders faced difficulty in explaining the difference between "equity" and "equality" during his appearance on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday night.

The exchange has since gone viral online. In the interview, Maher asked Sanders to differentiate between the two terms, which many people often confuse. Maher explained to Sanders that "a lot of people hear 'equity' and they hear 'equality' like it's the same word, but it's not the same word and the same concept."

Sanders struggled to provide a clear definition of equity, stating, "Well equality, we talk about – uh, I don’t know what the answer to that is." He later defined "equality" as "equality of opportunity." Maher continued to push Sanders for a definition of "equity."

"Equity, I think, is more of a guarantee of outcome, is it not?" Maher asked, interrupting Sanders. Sanders agreed, saying, "Yeah, I think so." When Maher asked Sanders which side he comes down on, Sanders responded with "equality."

The exchange between Maher and Sanders received criticism from conservative political commentators. Radio host Buck Sexton called Sanders an "ignorant moron," stating that he doesn't understand the belief system he's been pushing for 60 years.

Political commentator Dave Rubin said that Sanders' inability to differentiate between equity and equality should end his career, adding that Sanders' socialist, progressive exercise is built on equity. However, OutKick founder Clay Travis praised Sanders for defending "equality" over "equity" on Maher's show.

In addition to the controversy surrounding the exchange, Sanders also faced criticism after it was revealed that tickets for his show criticizing capitalism would cost his fans $95. Representative Austin Scott of Georgia called Sanders "the ultimate capitalist" in response to the news.
