Shortly after entering the country, gunmen opened fire on the vehicle. They pulled the men from the van, and now, the FBI is trying to find them. They are still missing.
Special Agent Oliver Rich announced that the FBI is seeking assistance from anyone who may know where the four individuals are at.
Fox News reports, “That day, ‘four Americans crossed into Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico driving a white minivan with North Carolina license plates. Shortly after crossing into Mexico, unidentified gunmen fired upon the passengers in the vehicle. All four Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken from the scene by armed men,’ the FBI said in a statement.”

CBS reports, “Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday that the Americans had crossed the border to buy medicine and ended up caught in the crossfire between two armed groups.”

A massive hunt for the four Americans continues. The FBI and connected government programs are leading the search. Mexican law enforcement officials are cooperating and helping search for the Americans. They’ve been missing since March 3. There is now a $50,000 reward offered for their safe return and the arrests of those involved.

They were headed through Matamoros, which is just across the border. This area is known for violence, which drastically escalated on the Friday the Americans went missing. A Gulf drug cartel is often at the center of the warring violence that takes over the city. The U.S. Consulate issued an alert on Friday because there was so much violence. Several others were injured that day, but the state police have not released information regarding other incidences.
