Attorney General Merrick Garland spoke with US Senators about the ongoing Fentanyl crisis in the United States.

He clarified that he feels that Mexican cartels are intentionally bringing the drug into the country.

The New York Post reported that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) started the hearing by saying that Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) had “basically challenged me — and I accept the challenge — to show as much concern about the gun deaths, show as much concern about fentanyl deaths in this country, and I want to do that.” This is why Garland was brought in to testify about the situation, and everyone present at the hearing was well aware of that fact.

Graham had his opportunity to speak about the situation and said that it is time for the country to “up its game” regarding its response to the Fentanyl crisis in this country. It impacts many lives throughout the country, and there hasn’t been enough of a response from government officials to help make this situation any better for those suffering.

The New York Post reports that Senator Graham said the following when it was his turn to speak: “There is no strategy that I can discern about how to deal with the poisoning of Americans through fentanyl.”

Garland did not answer many of Graham’s questions directly. Instead, he continued to defect to the Defense Department, State Department, and Department of Homeland Security for things he didn’t want to ask.

Garland then said that more burden needed to be put on the Mexican government. He said they are “helping us, but they could do much more. There’s no question about that.” He said, “We do what we can do with respect to the jurisdictions that we have,” and he noted, “personally met with the families of children and teenagers and young adults and even the elderly who have taken these pills.”

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) pointed the blame squarely at the Biden Administration by saying that they haven’t done nearly enough to fix the immigration situation at the Southern Border. Cornyn argued:

“You’ve arrogated to yourself the decision to make policy by saying that in spite of the fact that there are mandatory minimum sentences for many of these drug crimes — which are now causing untold death and destruction across America — you’re telling prosecutors, ‘Don’t charge those if they involve a mandatory minimum sentence.’”
