Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown submitted his resignation just one day after Mayor Lightfoot lost her re-election bid, according to the New York Post.

Brown had served as the top cop in Chicago for the last two years, but much of his time in the role has been shaped by spiking violence rates in the city. This issue appears to have weighed heavily on Lightfoot’s failed re-election bid. She becomes the first Chicago Mayor in many decades not to win re-election.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Brown mentioned that he was taking a job with a private law firm in Texas in his resignation letter. Brown said: “I will continue to pray that all officers return home to their families safe at the end of their shift,” and “May the Good Lord bless the city of Chicago and the men and women who serve and protect this great city.”

Lightfoot released a statement saying Brown’s resignation would be effective March 16th.

Mayor Lightfoot wrote: “I accepted his resignation and want to commend him for his accomplishment, not just for the department but for the entire city, including setting a record number of illegal gun recoveries for two consecutive years.”

She continued, “I want to thank him for his service to our city. First Deputy Eric Carter will be appointed interim superintendent until the new Mayor is sworn into office.”

Lightfoot received a lot of criticism from many sides that she failed to control crime in Chicago. She received just 16.4% of the vote in the Democrat primary. This put her vote share behind Chicago schools chief Paul Vallas and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson.

Vallas and Johnson will head to a runoff election as they were the top two finishers. Both received less than 50% of the vote, so they must now compete head-to-head in a runoff. Vallas is considered the favorite to win by many as he received 33.7% of the vote in the first round compared to 20.3% for Johnson.

Lightfoot made a concession speech in which she said: “I will be rooting and praying for our next mayor.”

There is not much more left for Lightfoot to say as she has made so many mistakes and errors along the way that she is not considered a serious contender for being the Mayor yet again. She must accept that she must move on to the next chapter of her life.
