The Sheriff of Volusia County, Florida, Mike Chitwood, has identified the Goyim Defense League (GDL) as a neo-Nazi hate group and proclaimed himself on their "hit list," according to an article in The Daily Beast.

The group was responsible for anti-Semitic flyers being left on people's doorsteps and anti-Jewish banners hung from pedestrian bridges in Daytona Beach during the Daytona 500 weekend.

The group held a demonstration outside Chabad of South Orlando on February 17, which resulted in pedestrians and motorists being harassed, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The next day, members hung signs at the Daytona International Speedway with sayings such as "Henry Ford was right about the Jews." They projected anti-Semitic slogans outside the track, with one reading, "Hitler was right."

At a press conference on the incident, Sheriff Chitwood stated, "These scumbags came to the wrong county... We are not going to tolerate this. This is not about free speech. This is about violence." The GDL members, led by Jon Minadeo, have already been arrested for causing a disturbance in Florida. However, Minadeo maintains that his group has never acted violently toward Jews.

Chitwood listed several arrests and charges that the 15 or so GDL members seen in town had on their records. He walked reporters through a "rogue’s gallery" of those suspected to have been involved, stating that their rap sheets included stalking, threatening a public official, aggravated assault, murder, terroristic threats, vandalism for defacing a memorial for victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre and soliciting a 14-year-old for sex.

Chitwood then proclaimed himself on the GDL's "hit list," saying it’s a "badge of honor," challenging them to "put a bullet in the back of my head." He also had some choice words for Minadeo when asked for comment by The Daily Beast, stating, "Excuse my French, but fuck you, motherfuker."

In recent years, Neo-Nazi groups have looked to expand their recruitment across the United States using racist flyers. Specifically, a major event occurred in Florida when extremists hung swastika flags from an overpass in Orlando. Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, denounced the Neo-Nazis as "jackasses" yet complained that the Democrats exaggerated the incident to make him appear bad.
