Republican lawmakers in the House Judiciary Committee have launched an investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a 20-year-old Maryland woman.

The alleged perpetrator is an MS-13 gang member who entered the country as an unaccompanied minor. In a letter addressed to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Tom McClintock of California demanded information regarding the case.

The letter highlights the role of the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in caring for unaccompanied children referred by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The suspect in this case, a 17-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador and a known MS-13 gang member, entered the U.S. as an unaccompanied child and identified a woman in Maryland as his aunt.

Jordan and McClintock criticized the Biden administration's open border policies, which they believe have created opportunities for criminal aliens and gang members to exploit and harm American citizens. The victim in this case, Kayla Hamilton, was found raped and strangled to death in a mobile home she shared with her boyfriend.

The victim's mother, Tammy Nobles, told FOX 45 Baltimore that her daughter had autism but was working hard to be independent. She expressed her frustration with the system that allowed the suspect to enter the country and remain in Maryland. "He shouldn't be here," she reportedly said last month.

In their letter, the lawmakers requested that Becerra provide all case information related to the suspect, including his case file, family reunification packet, and any materials provided by federal agencies like Customs and Border Patrol upon his referral to HHS ORR. They also asked for a detailed description of the steps HHS took to establish and verify the suspect's age, as well as his status as an MS-13 gang member.

Jordan and McClintock further demanded that HHS provide all case materials relating to the vetting of the suspect's sponsor, the woman he identified as his aunt. The deadline for the materials requested is March 13 by 5 p.m.

The investigation is part of the House Judiciary Committee's oversight of the Biden administration's enforcement of federal immigration laws. FOX News Digital reached out to HHS for comment on the matter.

This case raises questions about the effectiveness of the current immigration policies and the vetting process for unaccompanied minors. It also highlights the dangers criminal aliens and gang members pose to American citizens.
