There are some scary data from the FBI recently regarding the clearance rates on homicides that the department is investigating.

The New York Post reports that the FBI has data showing that the clearance rate for homicide investigations has plunged. It stood at approximately 71% in 1980 but dropped to an all-time low of 50% in 2020.

Thomas Hargrove, a founder of the Murder Accountability Project, spoke with the Guardian and stated that the alarming reality is that the United States is on the verge of becoming the first developed nation to have the majority of homicides committed within our borders go unsolved. That is a horrifying statistic to think about because it means that there is a better chance that a murderer gets away with that crime than he doesn't.

The group keeps track of the clearance rates for murders in the United States, and it seems that the clearance rate was potentially as high as 90% in 1965, but that rate came down considerably until it hit the recent low of 50% in 2020. A big part of the reason for these numbers is that there were many more homicides in 2020 than in previous years. This has been the terrifying trend that has occurred repeatedly in the Biden years.

The New York Post that it is unclear what contributed to the spike in murders in 2020, but many experts have started to question if it could be attributed to the pandemic and the conditions that this created for many people. That is certainly something that appeared to have happened in big cities for a time, but then there appeared to be a warning of those homicide numbers after a while. Therefore, it is not entirely clear that this can all be blamed on the pandemic.

It is important to note that while organizations such as the Marshall Project track homicide data, there is no centralized government database where everyone can access the same information simultaneously. Therefore, there are a lot of concerns about getting and maintaining accurate data over the years. It might be the case that some are not able to keep track of the various homicide numbers year after year because of the scattershot way in all of this data is compiled. Thus, it is important to always have this in your mind as you look at how these numbers are compiled. Regardless, it is a scary trend based on the data that we do have.
