There is new information about how the Navy decided to move forward with an all-female flyover during the Super Bowl.

According to Fox News, this decision was made just days before the big game.

An aircrew member told Fox News Digital that having an all-female flyover wasn't always the original plan. Some male pilots had already been selected for this mission and were "very excited" about getting their chance to move forward with this mission. Still, they didn't get that chance because they were bumped from the mission after it was decided at the last minute to have an all-female crew of pilots flying over the Super Bowl instead.

The press release from the Navy stated that the flyover on Jan. 26 would commemorate a 50-year history of women flying in the Navy. However, the original lineup released for this flyover included many male pilots. Military.com indicated that the original lineup only included three women. The service members honored with getting the chance to do this flyover was honored with digital playing cards similar to baseball cards and promoted on social media.

The aircrew member said: "Basically every Friday until Jan. 27, there was a teams meeting with the NFL and the Navy,". The aircrew member also said: "The 26th was when the digital playing cards were released by the Navy via Facebook and Instagram," and

"Another teams meeting the following day on the 27th, and then the next day, Saturday morning, was when we all got phone calls telling us that we were no longer part of the flyover because … the mission had changed and they were prioritizing all-female aircrew for the flyover."

He said that the last-minute change of plans was a major surprise for everyone involved and that many were upset by the late developments in the lineup that eventually went out over the event. This was a significant change that appears to have been placed at the last possible minute, and that goes against everything that one would expect when setting something up through the military.

The source told Fox News Digital that the most challenging part about the last-minute changes was having to notify the family and friends of those who had been told they would be doing the flyover. Many had their hearts broken because they were now being bumped from the mission. That must have indeed been a hard thing to bounce back from.
