A former communications worker for Vladimir Putin has died at the age of 71.

The New York Post reports that the man’s family reported that he passed away after combating a prolonged illness. The man worked for the Kremlin for approximately 15 years before falling out of favor with Putin. His family released a statement recently about his passing.

An announcement from the family about the death of this man read:

“Relatives and friends of Gleb Pavlovsky express their deep gratitude to everyone who supported and helped all these months, went through all of this with us, endured, understood and protected.”

No additional details were given about the illness that Pavlovsky faced or the funeral arrangements moving forward.

Pavlovsky became involved in dissident activities as a university student.

However, in 1982, Pavlovsky was arrested and pled guilty to charges against him. To avoid some of the harshest possible penalties, Pavlovsky agreed to testify against some of his colleagues. This is a move that many of them never forgave him for, and plenty in the dissident movement are still quite angry about the actions that Pavlovsky took.

Pavlovsky was sentenced to three years of exile. After he served that time, he returned to Moscow and joined a pro-democracy movement in Moscow.

The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and Pavlovsky became a political consultant and helped get Russia’s first President, Boris Yeltsin, re-elected in 1996.

Yeltsin stepped down, and Pavlovsky began working as a political consultant for Vladimir Putin. He started that work in March 2000 to help secure Putin’s first election win.

Pavlovsky lost his job as a political consultant to the President’s office in 2011. However, he was still offering advice to the Kremlin even though he had fallen somewhat out of favor with Putin and his closest allies. Regardless, he still had much to offer the Russian government because of his vast experience.

In the end, Pavlovsky was not near as close to Putin as many others. He was a vocal critic of Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine last year. It earned him a reputation that went against the Kremlin and the powers that be. This is something that Pavlovsky wasn’t afraid to do. However, he has now passed away at 71, and the Kremlin no longer has to be concerned about the criticism it received from this man.
