A very high-profile case continues to brew in Idaho at this time.

You might have already heard something about it because it was all over the media as it happened. This is because, tragically, four college students were murdered in their own homes by an unknown killer. Since then, authorities have been able to catch up with who they suspect did the murderers. The Post Millennial reports that Bryan Kohberger is their suspect, and they also say that he could potentially face death by firing squad if he is convicted of the murders.

Kohberger is a 28-year-old former criminal-justice doctoral student accused of the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students on November 13, 2022. Those victims were Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21.

Prosecutors have not yet indicated if they intend to pursue the death penalty against Kohberger, but plenty of people would be happy if that is the route they decided to take. After all, there is a lot of pent-up anger against Kohberger, given the nature of everything that happened in these slayings.

The Post Millennial reports that Republican state lawmaker Rep. Bruce Skaug, chairman of the state House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee, introduced legislation that would bring back the firing squad as an approved form of execution in the state of Idaho. This is important to remember because it could directly apply to the case against Kohberger.

The state already has the death penalty on the books, but those deaths are carried out via lethal injections. The new piece of legislation would allow Department of Corrections officials would have the option to pursue a firing squad death for a prisoner who has a death warrant issued for them if they are not able to obtain the chemicals necessary for lethal injection within five days of the death warrant.

Utah is another state that recently brought back the firing squad for use with executions because they were having a problem getting the drugs needed to get lethal injections done like they used to get done. Therefore, this move by Idaho would not be without precedent.

Prosecutors in the Kohberger case are allowed until July to decide if they will pursue the death penalty in this case. Kohberger has been charged with four counts of murder related to the stabbing deaths that prosecutors alleged were committed by Kohberger.
