Recently, a United States Navy plane was under grave threat when the Chinese ordered it to fly away from its airspace.

Fox News reports that a United States military craft flying over the South China Sea received a radio warning from the Chinese that it needed to leave the area. The Chinese also scrambled one of their jets to track the American plane.

Fox News reports that the warning stated:

“No approaching anymore, or you will pay full responsibility!”

According to NBC News, the Chinese air force ground station’s warning came in over the radio to the U.S. Navy P-8 flying outside the Chinese airspace over the South China Sea.

Not long after the warning, a Chinese aircraft scrambled to track the U.S. plane, and it flew approximately 500 feet from the left wing of the U.S. plane. The Chinese tracking plane stayed on the tail of the U.S. plane for over an hour before it finally peeled away.

U.S. officials say these confrontations are becoming increasingly common as China attempts to position itself as a true superpower globally. They are more willing to take these dangerous measures to assert dominance.

Capt. Will Toraason, U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft commander, spoke with NBC News and said:

“Typically, we don’t get a response; sometimes, we’ll get nonverbal responses. But overall, we’re trying to encourage a safe and professional encounter while [we’re] both operating in international airspace.”

“Since I’ve been in the Navy, going on 18, 19 years now, I can tell you there is a dramatic change over that span, specifically the South China Sea,” commented Cmdr. Marc Hines. In recent years, some tension has been over China’s creation of artificial islands in the South China Sea.

This increased tension comes as tensions remain high between China and the United States after the Chinese flew some spy balloons over the United States. The U.S. shot down one of those balloons over South Carolina.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi held a confrontation. Blinken made it clear that China must never repeat the balloon incident.

Fox News reports that China has been critical of the United States for its reaction to the balloon incident and that the United States overreacted regarding the balloon. China claims there was no reason for concern.
