A shopper at Montgomery County smoke shops can hum the words from the Stones “you can’t always get what you want” when purchasing THC gummies.

It seems a little extra-extra was added to the mix, including heroin and fentanyl.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Tobacco Hut shops in Hatfield, Montgomeryville, and Blue Bell sold multiple brands packaged with illicit drugs. Brands including Packwoods Coned, Strictly Delta, and Urb Extrax are a few examples of what customers have been warned not to eat.

District Attorney Kevin Steele has launched an investigation and wants people to be aware of the danger and to take precautions. Steele said, “If you have bought any of these items from any of these stores, please do not eat them.”

Two opioid overdoses triggered the investigation in the past month. The victims, who experienced nonfatal opioid overdoses, informed law enforcement that the only gummies they had eaten were purchased from a Tobacco Hut location. They believed the product contained Delta-8 THC or CBD.

Detectives from Montgomery County went to the Tobacco Hut’s Blue Bell location on February 17 and purchased several varieties of gummies. The products were tested for narcotics shortly after the purchase by the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. The Strictly Delta gummies were found to contain fentanyl. Other Strictly Delta gummies contained fentanyl, heroin, and methyl fentanyl. Testing also found the products containing the synthetic cannabinoid K2, also known as spice.

Additional searches of Montgomery County locations found more products containing illicit substances. Steele stated, “We have found fentanyl through at least three different types of items that were being sold at these Tobacco Huts stores.”

No arrests have been made, and the investigation continues.

The operations manager for the three Virginia-based Tobacco Hut shops, Ibraham Alhumaidi, said, “We’re victims, we were the middleman, we bought our product from a legit source, and we just sold it.” “We didn’t manufacture any of these products.” He added that although the gummy products make up a small part of the inventory, the store lost a significant amount of stock when authorities searched the stores.

One of the manufacturers of the illicitly-laced products, Strictly Delta, was unreachable for comment.

Ryan McNeil, director at Yale University for harm reduction research, noted that the lack of a retail market to sell marijuana products overseen by regulations legally creates the conditions promoting illicit products.
