Newport News Police are actively investigating a situation with a fifth-grader at Richneck Elementary School related to a potential threat of gun violence.

ABC News reports that the fifth-grader allegedly sent a text to a group message thread with his friends that said he wanted to “pop some bullets” and “tell someone to shoot up the class” on Saturday.

Sadly, this is just the latest incident related to gun crimes and threats at Richneck Elementary School. In January, a 6-year-old student shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, in the middle of her instruction. The police just wrapped up their investigation of that incident on Tuesday, and now they are dealing with this next possible threat from a student at the school.

To be on the safe side, the Newport News Police have decided to provide extra security at the school as a precaution for anything that could potentially happen based on the threats posed by the student that texted his friends. There are undoubtedly many elements to unravel in a case like this, but it does appear that the police are doing everything in their power to get to the bottom of all of this and keep everyone safe at the same time.

ABC News reports that Richneck school administrator Karen Lynch sent parents a letter to inform them about what had happened and provide them with the latest updates on the situation. The school is attempting to keep parents calm and help them understand what has been happening within the school lately.

One of the students who received the chat via the group text informed their parents, and the parent notified a teacher at the school. This led to the latest investigation and checking up on everything happening at the school. It is certainly something that parents need to be aware of at this time to keep their children safe to the best of their ability.

ABC News obtained a letter stating that the student was immediately “excluded from school” while the investigation unfolded.

Lynch added, “Threats and safety concerns are always taken very seriously. Please rest assured that all protocols are being followed and this incident is being addressed accordingly.”

Many people are waiting and watching to see what will happen next in the course of this investigation and in the days to come. It will remain a hot topic of conversation and something worth keeping an eye on.
