According to The Post Millennial, locals who enjoy an outing on the scenic boardwalk get more than they bargained for.
The sweet-loving Cookie Monster wants passersby to stop, have a picture taken, and then pay for the privilege. The character adds a spice that’s not so nice by shouting a barrage of taunts and obscenities as onlookers check out the photo ops.
According to the New York Post, police spokesperson Joyce Blaschk said on Wednesday, “We are getting calls from people who say he is ‘creepy.’ Based on his history, we advise the public to not engage with this individual. Steer clear from him.”

The Santa Cruz police suspect that 59-year-old Adam Sandler is portraying Cookie Monster and, as of Tuesday, had not committed a crime. Sandler has no connection to SNL.

Lookout Santa Cruz reported, “he is not employed, contracted or permitted by the City of Santa Cruz, nor by any of the local businesses.”
The New York Post reported in 2013 a story about another Sesame Street character, Elmo, who was being portrayed by a man named Dan Sandler, also known as Adam. The “Evil Elmo” was notorious for harassing tourists in New York’s Time Square with shouts of anti-Semitic slurs.

According to the Post, “Blaschke declined to confirm if (Cookie Monster) Sandler is the so-called Evil Elmo.”
Sandler’s criminal record includes a year spent in jail for extortion when he spread rumors the Girl Scouts were involved in running a Cambodian “Rape Camp.” He fabricated the story, but when appearing in Manhattan Criminal Court, he said, “I accept the fact I committed a crime, but I’m not in any way sorry to the Girl Scouts organization.”

Another report by the Post notes Sandler “grabbed a kid while panhandling in his furry Elmo costume” and was arrested for the crime in San Francisco.
The New York Police Department addressed costumed characters in 2014 who wanted tips for taking pictures with a notice, according to CBS. The notice said, “Photos with costumed characters are free. Tipping is optional.”
