On Friday, Tennessee lawmakers passed a pair of bills that seeks to ban public drag show performances in certain areas and another bill banning sex changes for minors in the Volunteer State.

The two bills have passed the legislature, and now both are headed to Governor Lee’s desk for his signature.

House Bill 9 passed on Thursday by a 74-19 vote in the House. The sister bill passed the Senate by a vote of 26-6.

The Post Millennial states that Senate Bill 3 seeks to amend the definition of “adult-oriented business” so that drag shows could not operate within 1,000 feet of a school or place of worship. Hill reports that the definition of an adult-oriented business would be changed to include “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest.”

The legislation states that the first-time violation of this law would be classified as a Class A misdemeanor. This would be punishable by up to one year in jail and up to $2,500 in fines. Violations beyond that would be a Class E felony and result in a prison sentence of one to six years for that offense. This is a stiff penalty for someone who has violated this new law. Still, the purpose of doing this is to make sure there are restrictions in place against the rapid expansion of the number of drag show performances that have been occurring throughout the country.

House Bill 1 passed the House on Thursday by a vote of 77-16, and its sister bill Senate Bill 1, passed at an earlier date. These bills prohibit sex change operations on minors. The Post Millennial defines the new restrictions as performing operations on minors “to enable a minor to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the minor’s sex.” This will be prohibited if the Governor signs the legislation.

At this time, there is no indication one way or the other about how the Governor might react to these bills or if he plans to sign them or not. Much of this will come down to how the Governor feels about how the public might receive this kind of legislation. In Tennessee, this is popular with many different state residents.

These kinds of legislation are also gaining steam in many other states. They have become popular because politicians in these states feel they must take action to prevent anything else from happening with these drag shows.
