Mardi Gras is the biggest holiday of the year for the people of New Orleans, but some in the city suggest that people should stay away from the festivities at this time.

They are saying the fact that their city has been called the "murder capital of the country" is no mistake. Fox News reports that yet another fatal shooting took place on Sunday, and it was no mistake that this place had been labeled as the murder capital of the country as a result.

"Don't go here alone," said resident Ryleigh and followed that with the helpful advice, "Stay safe. Stay in a group."

Needless to say, some are going to go to New Orleans regardless and try their luck anyway. It might not work out so well for them, but there are a lot of people who are going to give this a try regardless.

One woman from Virginia disagreed with the idea of avoiding the city. She stated: "There's a bad apple in every bunch" and "There's nothing to be afraid of. Everybody's full of love here." However, she doesn't live in the area full-time and might not understand what she's talking about. She is expressing a view based on a narrow view of the city she has seen while visiting the area. However, this does not mean she is correct in how she has examined the situation in New Orleans.

Fox News reports that the number of reported homicides in New Orleans was 266 in 2022, 116% higher than in 2019. This is based on the New Orleans City Council crime database. This year, New Orleans recorded more homicides per capita than any other major city in the United States. However, Jackson, Mississippi, unseated New Orleans as the murder capital of the United States.

"We've got real problems," said Sally, a New Orleans native. She also said, "You have to be careful. You have to be aware of what's going on." when speaking with Fox News about the spike in violent crime in the city.

The annual Mardi Gras celebration brought tens of thousands of people out onto the streets and into the bars in New Orleans. This is highly typical of the Mardi Gras celebration every year. Therefore, it's not surprising that some are benefiting from these celebrations continuing. However, it's still important to be honest about the current crime situation.
