Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that a credible military threat is the most effective means of deterring Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Speaking at the Hertog National Security Conference in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu stressed the importance of taking military action to prevent rogue states from developing nuclear weapons. He noted that while economic sanctions can be effective, they are not a sufficient condition, and credible military action is often necessary.

Netanyahu also highlighted the significance of taking action sooner rather than later, as delaying military action can make it increasingly difficult to deter a nuclear-capable Iran. In the conference, he referred to the successful Israeli military strikes against the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq in 1981 and a suspected nuclear reactor in Syria in 2007, which thwarted the nuclear ambitions of both countries.

Netanyahu also drew attention to the case of Libya, which abandoned its pursuit of nuclear weapons due to fear of a US military strike. In contrast, North Korea has continued to pursue its nuclear ambitions, demonstrating the limitations of economic sanctions without a credible military threat.

Iran suspended its nuclear program following the Gulf War out of fear of a US invasion, but the program was later transformed into a secret initiative disguised as civilian research.

Netanyahu also noted that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed by six world powers and Iran in 2015, was based on a credible Israeli military threat. “‘This crazy guy in Jerusalem is going to bomb them unless we do something.’ So that's how Iran came to the table, but then they left the cash on the table and did a lousy agreement.”

Netanyahu's remarks come at a critical juncture, as reports have recently emerged that Iran has increased its uranium enrichment to 84%, leaving only a small gap before it reaches weapons-grade production at 90%. The Israeli Prime Minister emphasized that he is committed to doing everything in his power to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, as it is not just an Israeli but an American and global concern.

In addition, Netanyahu spoke about the Abraham Accords, brokered by the US, which have normalized Israel's relations with four Arab countries. He expressed the hope that Saudi Arabia would be the next country to sign a peace agreement with Israel.

“I think we've, we can have a quantum leap if the Saudi leadership decides that it wants to be formally part of this. Informally, they're part of this,” he said.

“I believe that pursuing a peace that is based on common interests, of using Israeli power – military, intelligence, technological and economic – to buttress local, that is, peace agreements and normalization agreements with our neighbors can help achieve two things. One, it can expand the circle of peace. Second, it can serve as a bulwark against Iran.”

Netanyahu's call for a credible military threat to deter Iran's nuclear ambitions underscores the challenges of relying solely on economic sanctions. As the Iranian nuclear program continues to advance, the international community faces a critical juncture in determining how best to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
