At a hospital in Phoenix on Sunday afternoon, Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst was declared dead after the incident at Marana's airfield, according to a statement from the Naval Special Warfare Command given to Fox News Digital.
Rear Adm. Keith Davids, the leader of Naval Special Warfare Command, said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ernst family," "Mike was an exceptional teammate. He was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his talents and skills towards some of our nation’s hardest challenges, while selflessly mentoring his teammates. Mike and his family will always be part of the NSW family, and he will never be forgotten."

It is uncertain what led to the accident, and a probe is being conducted to uncover the source.

The Naval Special Warfare Command declared it would be unwise to offer any further remarks regarding the still-in-progress investigation.
Ernst, from Massachusetts, signed up for the Navy in 2009 and was part of the special warfare unit three years later. He was stationed on the East Coast at the time of the accident.
