The reason was allegedly due to the men being ridiculed after being defeated in consecutive games.
Police Lt. Romening dos Santos Silva commented, as multiple media outlets reported, that it appeared some of the victims had no connection to the game taking place in the establishment.

The New York Post states that, as they exited, the murderers stole a small amount of money from the pool tables and a woman's handbag.
The seven victims have been identified as Larissa Frasao de Almeida (12), Orisberto Pereira Sousa (38), Adriano Balbinote (46), Getulio Rodrigues Frasao Junior (36), Josue Ramos Tenorio (48), and Maciel Bruno de Andrade Costa (35). Elizeu Santos da Silva, aged 47, was sadly declared dead later that day.
