The Justice Department announced that it would be giving back some money seized from sources in Nigeria.

These are funds that can be traced to the former Governor of Nigeria. This is why some people are raising an eyebrow about this particular situation. They are concerned that the government might be making unexpected moves they don’t necessarily agree with or approve of. However, the Justice Department is moving forward with its plan to share approximately $1 million in money previously taken from Nigeria.

According to American Military News, the funds had been taken from a shell company run by the former Governor of the Nigerian state of Bayelsa, Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha.

When Alamieyeseigha was Governor between 1999-2005, he purchased a property in Rockville, Maryland. Reports at the time suggested that the property might have been purchased through money laundering operations. This is highly concerning to a significant number of people, and it is something that we should all try to get a grip on as far as understanding why this kind of thing is happening in the first place.

According to Africa News, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Leonard said that the repatriated funds would be used to provide healthcare services in Bayelsa.

“Today’s result would not have been possible without significant cooperation between the United States and its international partners in our common fight against corruption and the laundering of corruption proceeds,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. He continued by saying: “Our repatriation of the forfeited funds is an illustration of the United States’ commitment – through its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative – to making the victims of corruption whole.”

According to reporting by Reuters, the Governor was impeached on accusations of corruption, and he was later arrested in the same year in London. Alamieyeseigha was jailed in Nigeria and returned to his hometown two years later.

Officials in Nigeria have repeatedly stated that the funds coming back to their country will be used for healthcare services nationwide. This is important because many people have come to find that they are more willing to understand what the government is doing when sending funds back if they at least know that those funds are being used for a worthwhile cause, such as healthcare services. We all must hope this is genuinely what those funds are ultimately used for, and we have every reason to believe this will happen.
