President Biden announced Wednesday that he plans to visit the United States-Mexico border.

According to the New York Post, his visit is to “observe the effects of record-breaking illegal immigration. During a trip to Kentucky, as per the New York Post, Biden said, “That’s my intention.” The comment came in response to the question about whether he was going to the border. The President said he wants to see “peace and security” when he visits the frontier. He added, “No, I’m going to see what is going on.” He continued, “I’m going to be making a speech tomorrow on border security, and you’ll hear more about it tomorrow.”

Previously, during the President’s Arizona visit on December 6, when he gave a 16-minute speech at a computer chips factory, he said he could not visit the nearby border because he had “more important things” to do. The New York Post reported that he said, “I guess I should go down.” “But, the whole point [of it] is I haven’t had a whole hell of a lot of time to get down.”

The announcement comes a little too late for many conservatives. According to Fox News, conservatives took to social media to blast the President for waiting so long to make the border trip. Rep-elect Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, tweeted:

“Now Biden says his ‘intent’ is to visit the border next week. Too little, too late. But at least he’d get to see the crisis he created.”

Amidst record-breaking numbers of border crossings since Biden took office, the last three months of 2022 saw more migrant encounters. According to Fox, record illegal immigrant crossings continue to occur. As of last week, more than 600,000 migrant encounters have happened at the border since October 1.

The timing of when Biden will make the border stop remains unclear. His schedule shows he will travel to Mexico City on Monday and Tuesday for meetings with leaders of Mexico and Canada.
