Lil Nas X’s (whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill) debut NSFW music video for his new single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” is loaded with biblical imagery which challenges Christian doctrines on sex and homosexuality. Of course, the song sparked a new wave of “Satanic panic” among conservatives.

The shocking video opens with the queer artist relaxing in a place that reminds of some Garden of Eden, then he’s caught fraternizing with a sinful snake and, obviously, banished to hell, to where he slides down a stripper pole.

In hell the young man is met by a jacked, Satanic zaddy, who, presumably, takes Lil Nas X as his sex slave. The video ends with Lil Nas X performing a devilishly hot lap dance for Lucifer.

Soon after the premiere of this video, it was revealed that the rapper had collaborated with creative agency MSCHF on a diabolic version of Nike’s Air Max 97. However, Nike has distanced itself from the controversial clip. The sacrilegious sneakers, unsurprisingly, are all sold out now. The shoes feature a pentagram pendant, a symbol for Pagans, and a promise that the bright red shoes were ingrained with a drop of human blood.

“Luke 10:18” is inscribed on the side of the shoe, it’s a reference to the Bible verse: “He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven’.” Priced at $1,018, the limited-edition of only 666 pairs, teasing the so-called “number of the beast”, sneakers sold out in record time. “Y’all talked so much s–t about these shoes just for them to sell out in literally less than one minute. lmao y’all going out SAD!”

“Montero” and the cursed shoes have been, reportedly, cancelled by religious folks, who claim the “line has to be drawn somewhere,” according to Trevor Lawrence’s tweet. And Nick Young wrote:

“My kids will never play Old Town road again… I’m still debating about wearing @Nike after this come [on] nike a drop of blood for real.” Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota shared her opinion too, writing:

“Our kids are being told that this kind of product is, not only okay, it’s ‘exclusive.’ But do you know what’s more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. We need to fight hard. And we need to fight smart. We have to win.”

Joyner Lucas, a hip-hop artist, said:

“I think the biggest problem for me is the fact he dont understand ‘old town road’ is every kids anthem. Children love him for that record. They tuned in and subscribed to his channels. So, with no disclaimer he just dropped some left field ish & all our kids seen it. Smh.”

Montero Lamar Hill replied to Lucas, writing: “I literally sing about lean & adultery in old town road. u decided to let your child listen. blame yourself.”

On Sunday, Lil Nas X responded to overall criticism in a YouTube video titled “Lil Nas X Apologizes for Satan Shoe,” which mocks an apology before the trolling rapper cuts to the dirty hellscape of his new video.

At the same time, director, Andrew Thomas Huang, blamed Lil Nas X for borrowing heavily from FKA Twigs’ 2019 video for “Cellophane,” which Huang directed. Huang wrote:

“I’m a fan of @LilNasX. ‘Old Town Road’ is iconic. Sharing collaborators is common. Seeing the ‘Cellophane’ choreographer collab with Lil Nas X is awesome (love a Satan dance). Sharing aesthetics and paying homage is part of the creative process.” He later added:

“Intentional or not, copying other artists’ work happens. Making music videos is a labour of love. The demand for content pushed by major labels renders our work disposable and pits artists against each other. I urge the music community, particularly major record labels like @ColumbiaRecords to respect directors, uphold artistic accountability and honour the ingenuity of artists dedicating their blood sweat and tears to imagine better futures amidst a broken industry. We can do better.”
