Ivanka Trump this week announced that she is “unapologetically” pro-life, saying that motherhood improved how she thinks about the abortion matter.

“I respect all sides of a very personal and sensitive discussion,” Trump, the president's daughter, and White House senior adviser told Real Clear Politics only days before the election, “but I am also a mother of three children, and parenthood affected me in a profound way in terms of how I think about these things. I am pro-life, and unapologetically so.”

A White House aide said while Ivanka Trump’s position is personal it also shows the liberal shift he said Democrats have made on the matter.

Trump, who turned 39 on Friday, previously didn't talk about where she stood on abortion, and reports of a secret meeting with then-Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards in 2017 left some pro-lifers worried at the time.

Trump further told Real Clear Politics she names herself a pragmatist and a “Trump Republican.”

“I think a lot of these labels, to be quite honest, are really limiting in terms of what you call yourself or how you identify,” she said about Republicans and Democrats.

President Trump has similarly evolved on abortion, coming out publicly as pro-life before the 2016 election after years of identifying as pro-choice.

Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court somewhat because of her pro-life background and his dedication to the pro-life movement has encouraged him to keep the support of most Evangelicals.

In the 2016 election cycle, Trump was touted as the "liberal hope" whom many thought would operate to counter many of her father President Donald Trump's positions, including abortion — despite any encouragement from her.

In November 2017 and again in response to the Trump administration's hugely unpopular family separations immigration policy in August 2018, social media users gathered to a viral "Dear Ivanka" Instagram campaign believing she would be able to influence her father to change his ways. One artist who followed her on Instagram told the New Yorker it was because she is "the most sympathetic, the softer side of Trumpism."

But contrary to the public's hopes and her self-touted advocacy for women, Trump often dodged questions about abortion.

Americans' stances on abortion have become more polarized since Roe v. Wade made the medical procedure legal nationwide in 1973. A Gallup survey conducted in May of this year discovered 48% supported abortion rights and 46% did not.

During his presidency and leading up to his re-election campaign, Trump has doubled down on his stance against abortion.
